Corey Johnson, Our Choice for NYC Comptroller

June 7, 2021 3:15 PM

Among elected officials, New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson has been one of the staunchest allies of working people and our Union throughout his career in the City Council. His loyalty to the members of our Union and dedication to serving working people makes him the obvious choice for NYC Comptroller.

Johnson was first elected to the City Council in 2013 and ever since, he has consistently demonstrated his support for our union and our members. He has never been afraid to fight for inventive solutions and backed our Union’s efforts to restrict the growth of illegal hotels and temporarily limit the number of rooms hotel owners could convert into luxury condominiums (now expired). Just a few weeks ago, he once again backed our efforts by fighting to eliminate the hotel room occupancy tax this summer in order to jump start leisure travel to New York City.

Johnson has also been a leading advocate for criminal justice reform, LGBTQ rights, better mental health resources, and fairer rental laws during his time in office. Corey Johnson was the primary sponsor of legislation declaring a housing shortage emergency in 2015, ultimately forcing rent stabilization laws to be extended.

It’s no surprise to find that Corey Johnson has wide support from other labor unions besides our own. After all, he has demonstrated consistent and ardent support for working men and women. HTC is proud to endorse his candidacy for New York City Comptroller, and we urge our members to support the effort to elect him to that position.
