Boathouse employees are signing up to join our union
The courageous, hard-working employees at the Boathouse restaurant want to be members of our Union. A large majority of the employees have signed union authorization cards and a petition has been filed with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) for a vote by the workers to join the Hotel Trades Council. An election and subsequent certification of the Union could occur in the near future.

The annual Seniors’ Days health awareness event will take place at the Health Centers next week, Tuesday, May 9 through Friday, May 12 — one day in each of the four Health Centers, and no appointments are necessary.

The Union is holding a rally outside the Boathouse restaurant. Union members are urged to participate. We intend to support the Boathouse workers and we are confident that our membership will respond strongly to assist in this effort. The rally will be held at 4:30pm on April 21.

Campaign to Raise the Minimum Wage Continues
As we reported briefly in last week’s edition, hundreds of members of our Union turned out at a May 7 rally to raise the minimum wage. The featured speaker at the Union Square rally was Governor Andrew Cuomo, and he did not mince words in saying that New York’s working poor deserve a raise. Cuomo’s remarks were not political rhetoric. He backed them up with executive action.

Members Travel to Albany to Lobby Legislators
Almost 200 members journeyed to Albany on March 10, as part of the Share Better coalition, to lobby legislators. The members—and others—split into groups and met with more than 50 members of the New York State Assembly and Senate to express concerns about illegal hotels, illegal apartment rentals and Airbnb, the company whose web service helps enables these violations of the law.

Walkathon Benefits Coalition for the Homeless
The 28th annual Hotel Workers Walkathon, held on Sunday, September 29, drew hundreds of participants to raise money for the Coalition for the Homeless. It was a great day for all, as members and their families gathered at the Roosevelt Hotel for a complimentary breakfast to kick off the event. As always, it was a fun-filled effort to benefit a worthy cause: The New York City Coalition for the Homeless.
Members Vote Overwhelmingly to Ratify Contract Extension
On Thursday, June 4th HTC members voted, by an enormous majority, to approve a 7 year extension to the Industry Wide Agreement which will cover over 23,000 workers, securing an unprecedented 11 years of guaranteed wage increases and healthcare.
