Union Wins A Contract For the Evelyn Hotel Employees

HTC has won a contract for the 41 employees of the Evelyn Hotel. The workers unanimously ratified the contract on January 11, 2017. Now, their working lives have drastically improved thanks to the terms and conditions provided for in the Industry Wide Agreement (IWA).

Pension Increase for 27,000 HTC Members on January 1st!

In fact, we are sure that this will be a very happy new year for many Hotel Trades Council members who are thinking of retiring in the near future, as well as for all others who are thinking more long term. The Board of Trustees of the Industry-Wide Agreement Pension Fund has voted to enact what is by far the largest pension increase in the 80-year history of our union. This is particularly impressive when one realizes the HTC pension is already the largest pension anywhere in the hotel industry.

Remembering Fred Cristina,  a Plaza Hotel Employee for 64 Years

The Union lost an old friend last month, when Fred Cristina passed away at the age of 94. Fred was a member of our Union almost from its first day, beginning work at the Plaza Hotel in 1939. By the time he retired, in 2003, Fred had logged an extraordinary total of 64 years on the job at the Plaza—minus a few years while he was performing dedicated service to our country during World War II.

New Yorker Hotel workers receive $125,000 from consent award!

As many members will recall, a recent health and safety case at the New Yorker Hotel resulted in an arbitration consent award that included a $125,000 penalty that was to be paid to the workers.

Carlos Lopez, Warwick Hotel and Local 6 Vice President

Carlos Lopez, a fixture at the offices of HTC and Local 6 for more than 30 years, passed away on April 24. He leaves behind his son, Carlos Lopez Jr., his daughter-in-law, Diana, and grandchildren Matteo and Natalia. Lopez was 84 at the time of his death.

The news was greeted with great sadness by veteran members of our Union, but many of them also had very fond recollections of Lopez.

Union Staff Members Run Half Marathon in Honor of Michael Simo, Rebecca Pomares

On a recent frigid Sunday morning, a number of Union staff members laced up their running shoes and ran in the Fred Lebow Central Park Half Marathon. The Union’s running team, called “HEAT Lightning,” was created last year by Local 6 Executive Vice President & HTC General Counsel Richard Maroko, who is himself an avid marathoner.
