Theater District hotels sued for ADA violations

Five hotels in the theater district in Midtown have violated the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 and are being sued by the United States attorney's office in Manhattan. Since 2005, the US attorney's office has reviewed 50 hotels in the theater district, checking to see that at least some rooms have 36-inch wide doors, roll-in showers, and that the front desk, public restrooms, and main entrance are accessible to people with disabilities. The majority of hotels that were reviewed voluntarily signed compliance agreements, and of the five hotels in violation, only the Carter Hotel is union.
