Local 5 (Hawaii) wins contract with Starwood and Hilton

On March 14, Local 6's sister union in Hawaii, Local 5 Unite Here, agreed to a three-year contract with Kyo-ya Hotels & Resorts and Starwood Hotels & Resorts, after workers voted to authorize a strike. The contract covers 2,800 union members at the Sheraton Waikiki, Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Sheraton Princess Kaiulani, Westin Moana Surfrider, Sheraton Maui and Sheraton Kauai.
Borough President Ruben Diaz wants major hotel for the Bronx

A recent posting in Streetsblog makes clear that Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. continues his efforts to bring a world-class hotel to the Bronx. He noted his office has been working with both the Hotel Trades Council and the New York City Economic Development Corporation and is in discussions with multiple developers.

It was one hundred years ago this year that 146 workers lost their lives within minutes at the Triangle Factory Fire. The tragic events of Saturday, March 25, 1911, were remembered with special feeling this year.

Wisconsin anti-union bill becomes law but battle far from over

On March 9 and 10, Wisconsin's Republican state senators and representatives passed legislation that stripped almost all of the state's 175,000 public employees of their collective bargaining rights and simultaneously enfeebled the unions that represented them. Governor Scott Walker signed the bill into law the following morning. The bill is nothing less than the use of state power to suppress democratic dissent, and is worthy of the worst third world dictatorship.

In states nationwide, working people are protesting the actions to strip them of collective bargaining. The Triangle fire and the Upper Big Branch explosion a century later make clear to me that workers want and need that voice. Collective bargaining still means a seat at the table to discuss issues such as working conditions, workplace safety and workplace innovation, empowering individuals to do the best job they can. And it means dignity and a chance for Americans to earn a better life.
Wisconsin union-busting law blocked by judge

Wisconsin's Dane County District Judge Maryann Sumi issued a temporary order blocking Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker's widely criticized union busting law from taking effect. The law was blocked on the grounds that the vote on the bill violated Wisconsin's open meeting laws, which require sufficient advance notice of any legislative vote.
Contract wins at Chicago, Honolulu and San Francisco Hiltons

After fierce battles with the Hilton Hotel Corporation, hotel workers at UNITE HERE locals in Chicago, San Francisco, and Honolulu have won new contracts. The workers stayed the course for 19 months in Chicago and San Francisco, and 9 months in Honolulu. They made their determination to win strong contracts known by engaging in demonstrations, picketing, temporary strikes, and boycotts.
