As the U.S. observes this week the annual holiday in honor of the life of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., we should not forget the ties between Dr. King and labor unions.
HTC Pickets Woolworth in Times Square in Solidarity with Sit-Ins Across the South
In February 1960, four brave Black college students walked into a “whites only” lunch counter at a Greensboro, North Carolina Woolworth and sat down, igniting a protest movement to end segregation that spread across the country. The students – Ezell Blair Jr., David Richmond, Franklin McCain and Joseph McNeil – each ordered a cup of coffee and after being refused service, sat quietly in protest until the store closed. The student activists returned the next day in greater numbers and stoically bore the harassment and verbal abuse by white customers. By the third day, the number of peaceful protestors had swelled to the hundreds.
As the Greensboro sit-ins gained national attention, students across the South organized similar sit-ins at Woolworth and other segregated establishments. The activists were often met with aggression, police violence, and even bomb threats. Michigan becomes a so called “right-to-work” state

Michigan, a state with 671,000 union members, became the 24th "right-to-work" state in the country when Rick Snyder signed two "right-to-work" bills into law at 5:19 pm and 5:21 pm on Tuesday, December 11, 2012.

With February designated as Black History Month it is an appropriate time to look back on the heroic actions taken by these nine brave men. The Friendship Nine were made to pay for their “crime” of sitting at a “whites only” lunch counter in Rock Hill, North Carolina on January 31, 1961.

In two weeks we will mark the 105th anniversary of the founding of the NAACP. It is indeed appropriate that this observance is held at this time each year. After all, February is Black History Month.
Scab Rebecca Friedrichs Featured Speaker at Republican Convention

In the first ten minutes on the first night of its 2020 National Convention, the Republican Party featured a notorious anti-union former teacher, Rebecca Friedrichs, to deliver a vitriolic attack against labor unions. Friedrichs was the plaintiff in the 2016 Supreme Court case Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association, which aimed to defund and weaken public sector labor unions across the country.
At on time or another, as union members, many of us have run into a treacherous co-worker who is eager to lick the boots of their boss. There’s a term for such a character – scab. That’s Ms. Friedrichs in a nutshell.
The Republican Party’s choice of Ms. Friedrichs as the second speaker in its convention is a disturbing signal that the GOP is now even more hostile to the rights of workers than it has ever been. Read more...
Marriage Equality Act passes in historic 33-29 vote
On Friday, June 24, 2011, the New York State Senate passed the Marriage Equality Act, voting 33-29 to allow same sex marriages in our state. Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the bill into law at 11:55 pm, enabling it to become law within an hour and a half of the Senate approving it. The law became effective 30 days later, at midnight of July 24.
