Understanding Division A Renewals

This week’s edition of Hotel Voice reports that the Hotel Trades Council’s Division A scholarship program is now accepting applications for 2014. Although Division A contains a smaller percentage of the Hotel Trades Council’s membership than non-Division A shops, the Division A scholarship program is no less generous. Awards for the last three years alone amount to a total of $148,500!

The Division A scholarship program awards one-time grants of $2,500 to graduating high school seniors who will be attending an accredited four-year college or university later in 2014. But there is also a renewal program! Under the renewal program, previous Division A scholarship winners who have maintained a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better over the last year can receive an additional $2,000 for the next year of their studies. If they get a 3.0 the following year they are again eligible for a renewal grant of $2,000. Last year, 13 previous Division A scholarship winners qualified for renewals. In 2013, seven students qualified for renewals—with  two of them, Jakob Cichon and Katheryn Roberson, receiving grant money for all four years of college!

The renewal program has certainly been an excellent incentive for Division A scholarship winners to do well in college. Previous Division A scholarship winners who believe they may qualify for a renewal by having a GPA of 3.0 or better should call Division A Benefits Coordinator Jerry Sammartino at 212-492-2136 to apply for a renewal for 2014.
