Millennium Broadway, Harvard Club lead hoops league

The Hotel Employees Basketball League's season is underway, with the Millennium Broadway and the Harvard Club sharing first place honors. The season is still young, however, and several other teams have their eyes on the League's championship.

The Harvard Club's share of first place is courtesy of two tight victories, a 51-49 squeaker over the Trump Soho on opening night and a four-point win over the Roosevelt two weeks later. The Millennium Broadway has had an easier time of it so far, but they will face some tough opponents in the weeks ahead.

Besides being in first place, the Harvard Club also boasts of having the League's top scorer, Anthony Greer, who is averaging 21.3 points per game (ppg). Other leading scorers include the Hilton New York's Joseph Navas (19.0 ppg); John Cuello (18.5 ppg), Ralph DeJesus (15.0 ppg) and Juan Corporan (14.7 ppg), all from the Millennium Broadway; Frankie Maldonado (17.7 ppg) of the Roosevelt; Charles Forman (17.5 ppg) of the Mandarin Oriental and Alex Bordes (15 ppg) of the Hotel Pennsylvania.

After a holiday hiatus the League resumes action this week. Games take place on Friday nights beginning at 6:30 p.m., at Baruch College's gyms located at 23rd and 24th Streets and Lexington Avenue. Members who are interested in the Union's sports program can call Gary Shiff at 212-957-8000 ext. 314.
