Join Us! Hotel Workers Walkathon Is September 14

September 8, 2014 12:47 PM

On Sunday, September 14, the 23rd annual Hotel Workers Walkathon will raise money for Sanctuaries for Families. The Hotel Workers Walkathon always raises money for a worthy cause, and Sanctuary for Families is about as worthy a cause as we can imagine.

Sanctuary for Families is an organization that is dedicated to the safety, healing and self-sufficiency of battered women and their children. To fulfill this dedication, the organization provides a broad range of services, including shelter, legal assistance and counseling. Sanctuary for Families works to end domestic violence and its far-reaching impact through outreach, education and advocacy. Its ultimate goal is a world where every woman and child lives with dignity.

Founded in 1984, Sanctuary for Families has grown from a handful of safe homes in apartments and churches to the largest nonprofit agency in New York dedicated exclusively to domestic violence victims and their children. Each year, thousands of women and children benefit from the services of Sanctuary for Families’ devoted staff and volunteers. All services are confidential and provided free of charge.

The 2014 Hotel Workers Walkathon for Sanctuary for Families will be held on Sunday, September 14, beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the Roosevelt Hotel’s Terrace Ballroom.

The Roosevelt is located at 45 East 45th Street (at Madison Avenue) and its Terrace Ballroom is located on the main floor. All hotel workers, pensioners and family members who participate will be walking to raise money for Sanctuary for Families.

This year’s Walkathon will be the 23rd time hotel workers will walk through a route of midtown hotels to raise money and awareness for a good cause. Past Walkathons have raised between $20,000 and $25,000, and we are hopeful that this year’s event will do just as well.

As always, the Walkathon will kick off at 9:00 a.m. with a complimentary breakfast for all participants. Souvenirs will be distributed at the breakfast at the Roosevelt Hotel’s Terrace Ballroom There will also be some entertainment provided. After the breakfast, the participants will stop for a large group photo and then set out on a tour of midtown hotels. At each hotel they will have their “passbooks” stamped. Each one of those stamps means more money raised for Sanctuary for Families.

Many of the hotels along the route will provide refreshments. As always, the Walkathon will be a healthy, refreshing exercise, as well as fun for the entire family and a great way to raise money.

All Hotel Trades Council members are invited to participate in the Walkathon. Hotel pensioners and Local 6 Club Department employees and pensioners are also invited to join the fund-raiser, with the Union making contributions on their behalf. Everyone who participates is encouraged to bring along their friends and family members.

Remember, each and every participant means more money raised for Sanctuary for Families.

The Hotel Workers Walkathon is jointly sponsored by the Union and the Hotel Association, with additional contributions made by all the participating hotels. The Walkathon is always a fun-filled event, but it benefits a very serious cause. The Union strongly encourages members, pensioners and their families and friends to participate.

Again, this year’s Walkathon will be held on Sunday, September 14, beginning with a free breakfast at 9:00 a.m. at the Roosevelt Hotel’s Terrace Ballroom on the main floor. The Roosevelt Hotel is located at 45 East 45th Street. We hope to see you there!
