HTC Members Support Taj Mahal Strikers
Workers at Atlantic City’s Trump Taj Mahal went on strike on July 1, after repeated attempts to achieve a fair contract were unsuccessful. The strikers are members of UNITE HERE Local 54 and they are determined to win a fair agreement from the hotel, which emerged from bankruptcy earlier this year. The hotel is not owned by Donald Trump, but rather by Carl Icahn, a man that Trump has suggested could serve as U.S. Treasury Secretary.
Hotel Trades Council staff and members have been supporting the Taj Mahal strikers on the picket line each day. The workers received additional support on July 6, when the presumed Democratic nominee for U.S. President, Hillary Clinton, spoke at a rally at the hotel and later greeted picketers personally. On July 12 our members joined Taj Mahal strikers and other UNITE HERE members at a rally in Midtown Manhattan in front of Carl Icahn's offices.
“This is an important fight for all working men and women in our industry,” Hotel Trades Council President Peter Ward said regarding the strike at the Taj Mahal. “I thank our members for recognizing this fact and journeying to Atlantic City to show support for their union brothers and sisters and for joining us in Manhattan at the July 12 rally. I have assured Local 54 that they can count on our support for as long as it takes to win this battle.”
