The Hotel Employees Basketball League is providing exciting action each week! A perfect example is the game last week that featured a battle of the Hiltons—the Hilton New York vs. the Hilton Times Square. The game was a nail-biter throughout and ended with an almost unbelievable flourish. Kelvis Flandez capped off a 31-point night by drilling a buzzer beater from way behind the half court line, resulting in a 50-47 victory for the Hilton New York.

As close as the score was all game it certainly seemed destined for overtime, especially when the Hilton Times Squares’s Kenny Washington (17 points) made both ends of a 1-and-1 with just four seconds left on the clock. But then Flandez came up with his magical, game-winning shot as time expired. What excitement!

In other recent action the Trump Soho played great basketball in the first five minutes and last five minutes of the game, but it was enough to come away with a 47-42 win over the Westin Grand Central. Josue Grassals scored 12 points and Angel Mercedes added 11, while the Westin’s Dennis Porterfield led all scorers with 14 on the night.

In its game against the Waldorf-Astoria the Eventi jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Four Eventi players scored in double figures, and Steve Vergara had the hot hand for the Waldorf with 13 points.
In a match between the Roosevelt Hotel and the Mandarin Oriental Rob Constant was a constant force on the inside with 15 points.

The Roosevelt Roughriders jumped out to a quick 12-2 lead behind Frankie Maldonado’s three 3-pointers (13 points overall) and ended up keeping the lead throughout the contest. Charles Foreman was Mandarin’s top scorer on the night with 11 points.
