Cheap non-union hotels cut costs and risk fire
An electrical contractor violated the city building code and used wood, not metal which is fireproof for the fireproof "collars" that enclose electrical wires in at least four non-union Midtown hotels. He then sought to conceal the wooden collars from building inspectors by painting them black. Using wooden collars was a cheap and dangerous ploy to cut costs. The New York City buildings commissioner stated the contractor "put people's lives in danger to save a few dollars."
