A Look Back at Our Union’s History

Along with many well known figures like Dr. Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks, there are many lesser known giants of the Civil Rights movement. One of them, Franklin McCain, passed away this week. Franklin McCain, top photo, second from the left, and three classmates began a boycott of Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina, on February 1, 1960. Hundreds joined this action the next day and the boycott soon spread to more than 50 U.S. cities, including New York, where Local 6 led demonstrations outside Woolworth locations, bottom photos.
