The St. Regis New York hotel is sprucing up its most expensive rooms - and apparently, it can afford to.

Last year, the Fifth Avenue property outperformed other luxury hotels in the city by one important measure: revenues per available room, according to Paul James, head of St. Regis Hotels & Resorts, who quotes Smith Travel Research's proprietary data. "It's a sign that business is strong and that you need to look after your most loyal customers," says Mr. James.
