1,000 NYC retail workers win first union contract

May 25, 2009 8:00 PM

The Retail, Wholesale, and Department Store Union Local 1102 successfully negotiated a first contract for 1,000 workers at H&M clothing stores in New York City. Even in this uncertain economic recession, the union was able to secure wage raises and scheduling protections for the retail workers. Early in the organizing campaign, the Swedish clothing company agreed to remain neutral and voluntarily recognized the union when a majority of workers had signed union authorization cards. Union leaders hope this peaceful campaign can serve as an example of the organizing protections that could be gained if the Employee Free Choice Act were to pass.
