I am pleased to report that, late last night, and after arduous negotiations over the last few days, we were able to finalize an agreement with the Hotel Association that (1) continues healthcare for an additional month for members covered by the IWA and Division A contracts and (2) extends the Coronavirus Safety Protocol Agreement for the duration of this public health crisis.

New Yorker Hotel workers receive $125,000 from consent award!

As many members will recall, a recent health and safety case at the New Yorker Hotel resulted in an arbitration consent award that included a $125,000 penalty that was to be paid to the workers.

An update on healthcare negotiations

Many members are understandably anxious about losing their healthcare at the end of August. We are working diligently to negotiate an extension to your healthcare coverage and to extend the Coronavirus safety agreement.

These negotiations have been exceptionally challenging given that the industry is not making any revenue right now and the cost of healthcare is approximately $50 million a month.

HTC President Peter Ward appointed to advisory board on re-opening New York

HTC President Peter Ward has been selected by Governor Cuomo to be on the New York Forward Re-Opening Advisory Board. The board is made up of 100 academic, business, community and labor leaders from across the state, who will help guide the gradual re-opening of New York state in a way that balances public health and safety and the desire to return to a new normal.

Telephone visits available for workers covered by Industry-Wide Benefit Plan

As you know, the Industry-Wide Benefit Plan canceled all non-emergent doctor appointments at the Health Centers. This safety measure was taken in order to limit healthy patients’ exposure to the novel coronavirus, and reduce the spread of COVID-19.

We are happy to announce that the Benefit Plan has set up the technology and infrastructure to schedule non-urgent primary care medical appointments as telephone visits. For any HTC represented workers, covered by the Industry-Wide Benefit plan—and your dependents— you can now schedule a telephone visit for any internal medicine, family practice, and pediatric providers. 

Healthy Lifestyles Week Is a Big Success

Members and their families had a great opportunity to improve their health by attending Healthy Lifestyles, a health and wellness event that was held at the Health and Dental Centers in March. Those that attended received useful tips on living happier, healthier and longer lives, and in many cases received quick tests and/or screening for various health issues.

Mental Health and Emotional Wellness

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought on feelings of fear, uneasiness, and sadness for many. While the crisis has highlighted the importance of our physical wellness and safety, it is also important during these unprecedented and difficult times to preserve our mental and emotional well-being.

Seniors Days Are Scheduled at the Health Centers May 13-16
