Apply Now for a 2019 Union Plus Scholarship

Hotel Voice - November 19, 2018 Share/Save/Bookmark

This is a reminder that the Union Plus Scholarship Program is open to all members of the Hotel Trades Council and Local 6, as well as their spouses and children. Applicants for these scholarships do NOT have to be Union Plus credit card holders or participants in any other Union Plus program. In addition, the Union Plus scholarship program should not be confused with the Vito J. Pitta scholarship program or the New York Hotel Trades Council Division A scholarship program. (Eligibility information forms for applications for the Vito J. Pitta and Division A scholarships will be published in the Winter edition of the Hotel Voice magazine).

We urge interested members or children of members who have not yet applied for the 2019 Union Plus Credit Card Scholarship awards to do so immediately.
Since 1991, the Union Plus Scholarship Program has awarded more than $4.3 million to students of working families who want to begin or continue their post-secondary education. The amounts of the scholarships range from $500 to $4,000. These one-time cash awards are for study beginning in the Fall of 2019. And, yes, students, including previous scholarship winners, may re-apply each year.

The Union Plus scholarship committee will determine the recipients of this year’s scholarship awards by May 31. During the first two weeks of June award recipients will be individually notified by mail, and all applicants will be sent an email with notification that the award list is posted online. Please note that Union Plus cannot provide any information on the status of an application before award announcements are made.

A total of 37 members of the Hotel Trades Council and Local 6 are previous Union Plus scholarship recipients, including Rachel Resnick, who won two different times. At least one year of continuous union membership by the applicant, applicant's spouse or parent is necessary for eligibility. This is a competitive scholarship. Applicants are evaluated according to academic ability, social awareness, financial need and appreciation of labor. A GPA of 3.0 or higher is recommended. The required essays can account for up to half your total score. Scholarship applicants are judged by a committee of impartial post-secondary educators.

Remember, the Union Plus Scholarship Program is open to all Hotel Trades Council and Local 6 members, as well as their spouses and children, and applicants for these scholarships do NOT have to be Union Plus credit card holders or participants in any other Union Plus program.

It is also important to remember that applications for the Union Plus scholarship can only be obtained, filled out and submitted online. To do so, go to UnionPlus.org/benefits/education. But hurry! All applications for the next Union Plus scholarship awards must be submitted by 12:00 noon on Thursday, January 31, 2019.

We wish the best of luck to all who apply!
