Unions look to revitalize Garment District

Unite-HERE! hopes to maintain New York City as a fashion capital and save the Garment District by proposing to designate 1 million square feet of space in various buildings at subsidized rents for clothing manufacturers. In exchange, most zoning restrictions would be lifted from the area, which spans from 34th Street to 40th Street in Midtown. Additionally, the budget hotels that are popping up throughout the district would be required to obtain special permits before they could be built.
