State legislation introduced to combat illegal hotels

June 3, 2009 8:00 PM

Legislation has been proposed in the State Assembly to put an end to the illegal hotels that operate rampantly around the city. State Senator Liz Krueger and Assembly Member Richard Gottfried have proposed a bill that would recognize illegal hoteling as a form of harassment and give the Attorney General the authority to deny condominium and co-op conversion applications on that basis. Currently, nearly 280 illegal hotels are operating around the city, flying under the radar of government taxes and building codes. The illegal businesses not only rob the city of taxes and legitimate hotels of revenue, but they endanger the safety of both tenants and guests.
