An ordinance to protect workers' jobs for up to six months following a change in management has cleared the first of two City Council hurdles in Providence, Rhode Island. The ordinance would protect food service and hotel employees at Westin, Renaissance, and Hilton hotels and the convention center complex. After six months, the new owner or manager would be allowed to continue the employment under new terms or to layoff the workers. The purpose of the bill is to create some measure of employment stability to the city's workforce, and a second City Council vote is still needed before it will be enacted.
