Union hotel workers picket D.C.‘s Madison Hotel

Members of Unite Here Local 25 who work at the Madison Hotel in Washington, D.C., have been picketing the hotel since Monday, January 31, 2011. They are protesting the new owner's refusal to honor their existing union contract, which covers 150 workers. Twenty-five workers have been laid off since Jamestown, an asset investment and management company headquartered in Atlanta, took over the hotel on January 19.

HTC Pickets Woolworth in Times Square in Solidarity with Sit-Ins Across the South

In February 1960, four brave Black college students walked into a “whites only” lunch counter at a Greensboro, North Carolina Woolworth and sat down, igniting a protest movement to end segregation that spread across the country. The students – Ezell Blair Jr., David Richmond, Franklin McCain and Joseph McNeil – each ordered a cup of coffee and after being refused service, sat quietly in protest until the store closed. The student activists returned the next day in greater numbers and stoically bore the harassment and verbal abuse by white customers. By the third day, the number of peaceful protestors had swelled to the hundreds.

As the Greensboro sit-ins gained national attention, students across the South organized similar sit-ins at Woolworth and other segregated establishments. The activists were often met with aggression, police violence, and even bomb threats. Union Victory! HTC wins a contract at the Hilton Albany

After a four-month long boycott and picket line, HTC has won a contract for the 146 workers at the Hilton Albany hotel.

A tentative union contract was signed between the Boathouse restaurant and the Hotel Trades Council on Wednesday, September 21, 2011. A meeting is scheduled for Thursday for striking workers to vote to approve the agreement. The union has agreed to stop picketing the restaurant immediately.

Contract wins at Chicago, Honolulu and San Francisco Hiltons

After fierce battles with the Hilton Hotel Corporation, hotel workers at UNITE HERE locals in Chicago, San Francisco, and Honolulu have won new contracts. The workers stayed the course for 19 months in Chicago and San Francisco, and 9 months in Honolulu. They made their determination to win strong contracts known by engaging in demonstrations, picketing, temporary strikes, and boycotts.

Boathouse management’s faulty arithmetic and logic

97 out of 140 permanent Boathouse employees (69%) have voted for the union, with their feet, by picketing the restaurant. That includes 37 permanent workers who were illegally (i.e., temporarily) fired, whom the National Labor Relations Board intends to reinstate, and 60 more permanent employees who walked off the job in solidarity with their fired co-workers.
