Campaign to Raise the Minimum Wage Continues
As we reported briefly in last week’s edition, hundreds of members of our Union turned out at a May 7 rally to raise the minimum wage. The featured speaker at the Union Square rally was Governor Andrew Cuomo, and he did not mince words in saying that New York’s working poor deserve a raise. Cuomo’s remarks were not political rhetoric. He backed them up with executive action.

On Thursday, the day before the negotiations, the Union's Negotiating Committee met and agreed on an initial wage proposal consisting of: an across-the- board raise of $.60 per hour for non-tipped employees and $.30 per hour for tipped employees, and a plan for closing the wide gap between wage rates paid to employee within the same job classifications.

After the Republican-controlled Senate took a summer recess without approving any supplemental unemployment benefits for nearly 30 million Americans who are out of work, President Trump signed an executive order to partially fund additional unemployment benefits through the new “Lost Wages Assistance Program” overseen by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (“FEMA”).
The executive order, which potentially provides up to $400 a week in supplemental unemployment benefits, has caused broad confusion and raised many legal and operational questions. As a result, unemployed workers in New York and New Jersey have yet to receive any supplemental benefits. Read more...

Since the expiration of their contract at the end of October 2009, union workers at the Westin Providence, in Providence, Rhode Island, have been fighting for a new contract. Their efforts paid off when they recently approved a new three-year contract by a decisive 114-4 vote.
Sofitel security guards ratify their first HTC contract
On July 1, 2010, the security guards at the Sofitel New York ratified their first union contract. With this contract, they join the rest of the bargaining unit employees at the Sofitel and will now have the wages, benefits and protections that come with being members of the Hotel Trades Council.
Union Wins $500,000 in Back Pay for 44 Members at the New Yorker
An agreement between the Union and the New Yorker Hotel will result in raises and $500,000 in back pay, along with ironclad layoff protections for 44 current employees in building repairs/renovations and property operations.
