Workers freeze action in hotel lobby, but film crew rolls nearby

May 11, 2009 8:00 PM

Hotel workers at Jumeirah Essex House held a meeting in the lobby to protest the owners' refusal to pay $1.8 million in stolen tips to banquet staff. The owners' refusal to pay is in direct violation of the Impartial Chairperson's 2007 decision to pay the workers back wages dating to 2003. The lobby meeting ended with an Impartial Chairperson calling an emergency hearing at his office, and a formal hearing has been scheduled for May 14, 2009.
