Three years later Haiti still struggles to recover from earthquake

Three years after a tragic earthquake struck Haiti, the Hotel Trades Council remembers and mourns the estimated 250,000 people who lost their lives and the 300,000 people who were injured as a result of the horrific earthquake. With millions of Haitians in need of emergency assistance in the aftermath of the earthquake, the Hotel Trades Council and UNITE HERE's Local 6 joined the relief effort immediately, marshaling funds and donating $25,000 each to the American Red Cross. We applaud our many Haitian members for all the work they did to help the relief effort. Today, nearly 360,000 Haitians are still displaced, living in temporary tent cities across Haiti. As New York and New Jersey face the daunting task of picking up the shattered pieces that super-storm Sandy left in its wake, the perseverance of the Haitian people, in the face of a recovery effort that some have criticized as inadequate and misguided, is an inspiration to all of us. Here is a video made in the immediate wake of the deadly earthquake that ravaged Haiti. Let it be a reminder that the road to Haiti's recovery is long and there is still much to accomplish before we, as an international community and as a union, can move on.
