The three-day auction of Tavern on the Green's artwork, chandeliers, and other wares raised $3.5 million for the restaurant, a start at paying off its many creditors. More than 1,000 bidders attended the auction of 25,000 Tavern keepsakes. One of the biggest buyers of all was New York City itself. In a private deal with the restaurant, the city purchased many of the big items, including the wormy chestnut wood paneling and many of the ceiling fixtures.
