Concern continues about owners of apartment buildings who rent out rooms to tourists in buildings occupied in part by resident tenants. State legislators have introduced legislation in the New York State Senate and Assembly that will help the city enforce its laws against these illegal "hotels." New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg has voiced his support for this legislation, and calls illegal hotels, "fire safety and security hazards." The Illegal Hotels Working Group estimates that there were 280 illegal "hotels" in New York City as of 2009.
