The Huffington Post reported that while seeking the Republican nomination for New York governor, Carl Paladino proposed turning "underused" prisons into dormitories for people receiving public assistance. While there, they would work for the state government and take classes in "'personal hygiene'" and learn other "'basic things,'" like "'taking care of themselves,'" which according to him, they do not learn in the "'dysfunctional environment'" they live in. Living in such "dormitories" would be voluntary, not mandatory. Paladino described the prison properties as "'beautiful'" with "'bathroom facilities, toilet facilities, and basketball courts.'"
