New hotel activity continues in Manhattan

New hotel construction remains lively across the city, with international companies opening their first properties here and previously stalled projects resuming. Firmdale Hotels of London opened its first US property at the end of September, the Crosby Street Hotel in SoHo. Despite the economic downturn, the Crosby Street Hotel plans to market rooms at $525 per night.

Across town, construction is set to resume on a 59-story mixed-use tower on West 42nd Street. The sky-scraper will include a hotel, affordable housing units, rental apartments, and theaters.

The resumption of the West 42nd Street tower and the opening of the Crosby Street Hotel illustrate that the flood of new hotel development continues and that the threat it presents to our union's density has not abated.
