Labor, community groups protest while City approves Coney plan

Despite the protesting of a coalition of labor and community groups, the City Planning Commission has voted that plans to rezone and develop Coney Island be sent to the final approval stages. The labor and community coalition has been demanding for months that the project create more local jobs, improve existing infrastructure, and create more affordable housing, but their protests went unheard at the June meeting. The City is expected to give a final vote on the proposal at the end of July, but Thor Equities still stands to prevent any redevelopment from happening. The company owns a 10.5 acre stretch of land at Coney Island, including much of the boardwalk, and has refused to sell to the City citing low offers.
