Inn crowd grows in Times Square: Rivalry heats up with InterContinental’s arrival

When the InterContinental New York Times Square opens in July, the 36-story property on West 44th Street and Eighth Avenue will be the largest hotel to be built in the city since 2002. Its owner, a limited partnership led by Tishman Hotel & Realty, conceived of the property during the boom years, when its other large hotel, the Westin Times Square just down the block, was so busy it was forced to turn guests away. Now, in this economy, the two hotels will be scrappy competitors instead of collegial neighbors.
