The Hotel Trades Council is one of only a few NYC unions capable of making a real difference in the outcome of city elections. With both considerable experience and membership organization, the union is set to play an even larger role in the 2009 elections than it did in 2005. The union is focusing on ten races around the city, and it has upwards of a thousand members living within some of the targeted districts. When 100 or 200 votes can decide a race, the hotel workers' work on the ground could very well be what makes the difference between a candidate winning or losing. While a number of candidates have received the union's endorsement, it has yet to announce which mayoral candidate will receive its backing.
