City challenges Tavern on the Green operators for name

October 12, 2009 8:00 PM

The city's Department of Parks and Recreation has declared it will fight for ownership of the name Tavern on the Green, which was trademarked by the restaurant's current operators in 1981. The restaurant has been operating under the name Tavern on the Green since 1934. In 2008 Tavern on the Green was the second-highest grossing restaurant in the country, and the name has been appraised at $19 million.

The city continues to assert the name of the famed restaurant belongs to the city, but some legal experts question the strength of the city's claim to it. As yet, no lawsuit has been filed.
