The New York Hotel & Motel Trades Council (“HTC”) represents more than 34,000 hotel and gaming workers in New York and Northern New Jersey.

The HTC seeks an attorney with zero (0) to three (3) years’ experience to work in its legal department on issues relating to labor and employment law (both representing the union as a collective bargaining agent as well as an employer), municipal law, First Amendment law, bankruptcy law, real estate law, copyright law, and tort law.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist HTC’s General Counsel in all legal matters;
  • Advise and counsel HTC’s leadership;
  • Negotiate contracts, draft contract language, subpoenas, requests for information, position statements, and other general legal correspondence;
  • Ensure compliance with applicable law and governing documents;
  • Provide general legal advice and answer specific contractual questions, as needed;
  • Participate in all aspects of HTC’s operations (including picket lines, strikes, job actions, etc.);
  • Conduct investigations into sensitive matters unrelated to grievances and, where appropriate, make recommendations as to possible courses of action;
  • Draft arbitration demands, investigate, and prepare witnesses and cases;
  • Represent HTC in mediation, arbitration, litigation, and other fora;
  • Handle unfair labor practice charges and advocate at NLRB proceedings;
  • Oversee outside counsel;
  • Represent HTC in human resource matters;
  • Ferret out and investigate contract violations and enforce the contract; and
  • Perform any other tasks assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Admission to practice law must be pending or anticipated for recent law school graduates or those graduating in 2016; for all others, admission in good standing is required.
  • Excellent oral, written, analytical, and interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrated commitment to the labor movement;
  • Comfort and familiarity with LexisNexis and/or Westlaw;
  • Ability to be effective in confrontational situations, to handle multiple projects simultaneously, to work efficiently, and be well organized;
  • Willingness to work long and unpredictable hours;
  • Willingness to travel on behalf of the union, when necessary;
  • The ability to speak a second language is preferable.

Salary and benefits:
